A Fox Lake couple has been ordered to be held in jail after being charged with abusing a child, according to Lake County prosecutors.
Priscilla Marshall, 34, and Cody Marion, 35, were denied release after a hearing in Lake County Court on Tuesday. The couple is charged with aggravated battery of a child – Marshall’s son – and other counts, following their arrest earlier this month.
According to authorities, Marshall’s 11-year-old son was found bloodied and battered on March 6 after running away from home. An employee at a business saw the boy and alerted police.
Marshall and Marion were taken into custody and appeared on Tuesday for a detention hearing, where prosecutors said the child had endured years of psychological and physical abuse.
“Children must be protected with every tool we have.” State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said. “Our office will seek to detain every person who chooses to abuse members of our most vulnerable population, and then we will make sure that we hold them accountable after we secure guilty findings.
“To think of a child having to flee their own parents is heartbreaking, and I would tell anyone abusing their child that you will face serious consequences when we find you,” Rinehart said.
Crash victim identified
The Lake County Coroner’s Office formally identified the Barrington teenager who died March 9 in a single-car crash as Maximilian Sahinoglu.
Sahinoglu, 17, was killed when he lost control of the car he was driving and struck a tree on Ela Road near Long Grove Road.
According to an online obituary, Sahinoglu was a student at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, where he excelled as a soccer player. He is survived by his parents and an older brother.
911 operators praised
Lake County Sheriff’s Office 911 telecommunicators are being credited with directing officers who quickly tracked a stolen pickup truck and arrested the alleged thief.
A 911 operator took a call on March 7 from the truck’s driver, who reported the vehicle had just been stolen from a gas station in Beach Park.
Although the driver did not know his license plate number, his vehicle description allowed authorities to locate the vehicle on the Flock license plate reader system. The dispatcher was able to provide updates as the Flock system spotted the truck at other points as it headed south on Illinois Route 41.
In Northfield, police were able to stop the truck and arrest Alejandro M. Gonzalez, 37, of the 5300 block of South Kenneth Avenue, Chicago. He has been charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and theft.
“This is an excellent example of the professionalism and skill our sheriff’s telecommunicators demonstrate every single day,” Sheriff John Idleburg said. “Their ability to quickly gather critical information, leverage technology, and coordinate with officers in the field played a key role in the safe recovery of the stolen vehicle and the apprehension of the offender.”
Armed robbery verdict
A man is facing more than three decades in prison after he was found guilty earlier this month of shooting a man and stealing his car in Waukegan.
A Lake County jury found Kendrick Alverson, 24, guilty of attempted murder, aggravated vehicular hijacking and other counts following a trial that ended on March 5.
Alverson, authorities said, approached a man who was putting air into his tires on Dec. 13, 2020. After displaying a gun, Alverson reportedly shot the man in the stomach and drove off in the victim’s car.
Two days later, he was arrested by Wisconsin police officers after they said he led them on a 20-mile chase. Alverson abandoned the stolen car and fled on foot before police located him at a nearby convenience store and arrested him, police said.
Authorities tied clothing in the stolen car to Alverson, as well as a handgun found inside the car.
“From the beginning to end, investigators, experienced prosecutors, and forensic experts worked together to get the truth to this jury,” State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said. “And the truth is that this incredibly dangerous offender risked many lives through his crimes.”
Alverson is facing a minimum sentence of 31 years in prison. He is due back in court later this month.
