A 19-year-old Lake Forest man faces multiple felony charges alleging possession of child sexual abuse material after investigators traced an online account to his home, according to Lake County court records.

Michael Travis, of the 1000 block of Waveland Road, was arrested last month on six counts related to child sexual abuse material following an investigation into electronic accounts authorities said were linked to him.

The investigation began in late November when a Lake Forest police officer received a tip that a user had uploaded 134 files containing suspected child sexual abuse material between May and October 2025, according to court documents.

Police said they traced an account to Travis and executed a search warrant at his home Feb. 26. Prosecutors said Travis admitted to using social media to search for such material and that investigators found videos containing child sexual abuse material on his phone, court documents read.

Travis was taken into custody following the search. Lake Forest Police Chief John Burke said additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.

Travis appeared in court Feb. 27 and is being held at Lake County Jail. His next court date is scheduled for March 26. If convicted, he faces a potential prison sentence ranging from six to 30 years, according to the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Court records indicate Travis is enrolled at Lake Forest High School’s Transition Center as well as the College of Lake County.

District 115 officials declined to comment on the arrest citing student privacy issues and the ongoing investigation. They referred to a March 5 letter from Principal Erin Lenart stating that a Transition Center student had been arrested but that the alleged conduct did not occur on school property.

“In response to the situation, the District has taken immediate action, including coordinating with local law enforcement to ensure the continued security of our learning environment,” Lenart wrote.

The Transition Center provides post-secondary services for young adults often with special education needs.
