Triton alumni event features White Sox great

A Major League Baseball player will return to his roots when he hits the field for the Triton College Alumni Association’s “Reunion at the Ballpark” event from 6 to 9 p.m. March 27 at Symonds-Puckett Baseball Field at Triton College, 2000 5th Ave. in River Grove.

Lance Johnson had a 14-year career, including with the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs, after he played in the outfield as a Trojan, leading the team to consecutive NJCAA World Series appearances. His achievements at Triton led him to be inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame, Alumni Wall of Fame and the NJCA Region IV Hall of Fame. In 1992, Johnson received an honorary degree from the community college.

Johnson will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Reunion event, part of the alumni association’s program Reconnect – Your Story Continues, which honors the college’s first graduating class in 1967 and invites alums to celebrate accomplishments, share life updates and stay engaged with the campus community.

While supplies last, guests will receive giveaways. Admission is $5 at the door.

The Brookfield resident, who received an associate degree from Triton in December in accounting, is one of 39 Illinois students chosen for the program, a three-day virtual program that allowed participants to gain exposure and practical preparation, including interviewing and how to network successfully.

The program is aimed at expanding access for students historically underrepresented in accounting, such as first-generation students, those with ethnic minority backgrounds or those who have faced other barriers.
