Reconstruction on the East State Street corridor in Geneva is slated to begin later this month, the city of Geneva said recently.
The Illinois Department of Transportation will soon be starting a multi-year reconstruction project along East State Street, and the city is warning drivers to expect substantial traffic lane closures over the course of the work.
Work will begin with the installation of a new sanitary sewer main down the center of the state highway, the city of Geneva said in a news release. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction from Route 25 to near Nebraska Street. This new traffic pattern is expected to be implemented the week of March 23, with construction to begin the following week, weather permitting, the city said.
Then, once AT&T completes its ongoing utility relocation project in April, the work zone is expected to expand down the center lanes in both directions to Sandholm Street, per the news release.
This “pre-stage phase” of construction is expected to finish by May, the city said in the release, but the schedule is subject to change, and residents are encouraged to visit the city’s web page for the project for updates.
The reconstruction project is intended to rebuild the highway from Glengarry Drive to the Fox River, the city said. It includes new street lighting, sidewalks, roadway widening for a shared left-turn lane throughout the corridor, trees, bike lanes, streetscape enhancements, traffic signal upgrades and water main and storm drainage infrastructure improvements.
Construction is generally planned to happen between 7 a.m. and the close of business from Monday to Saturday, with occasional evening work, the news release said. The full project is expected to be completed in late 2027, with punch list items to be finished the year after.
