Two Thornridge High School students were in custody Thursday after a weapon was recovered at the Dolton school.

Thornton Township High School District 205 said in a statement its administration was notified at about 11 a.m. that a weapon magazine had been seen near the gym and immediately notified Dolton police.

Thornridge was placed on lockdown, which following a search transitioned into a soft lockdown for the rest of the school day, according to the district.

As part of the soft lockdown, instruction continued but movement throughout the building was limited, including entry and exit. Dolton said police received assistance from Cook County sheriff’s police and a firearm detection canine.

The village said one male and one female student were arrested and remain in police custody. The district said it will continue working closely with police as the investigation continues.

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority,” the district said in an emailed statement. “We are grateful for the swift response of our School Resource Officer and the Dolton Police Department, as well as the cooperation of our students and staff during this situation.”
