FORMER PORTAGE MAN GETS 3 YEARS FOR ARSON, OTHER PLEAS

A man got three years in prison Friday in a plea deal for arson and failure to return to lawful detention.

Lake Station Police found a severely burned Dale Heintz, now 43, walking along E. 27th Avenue Oct. 14, 2022, after a house in the 2600 block of New York Avenue exploded, court records said. When they asked him what had happened, he said, “I tried to kill myself but it didn’t work. I’m sorry,” records said.

He got 2.5 years for the arson plea and six months for the plea deal for failing to return to jail.

MAN DEEMED INCOMPETENT AGAIN FOR MURDER TRIAL

For the second time, a Lake County judge ruled Craig Withrow was incompetent for trial earlier this month.

Withrow, now 35, was charged with murder in January 2019 with the Jan. 26, 2019, beating death of David Carte, 48, of Gary, his roommate, at a long-term care facility in Gary.

He was found incompetent to stand trial in July 2019 and later transported to Logansport State Hospital. Since then, the case was revived last year after he was found competent again.

Judge Gina Jones ordered Withrow on March 13 recommitted for psychiatric treatment, court filings show.
