Evanston police have arrested Justin Hernandez, 32, of the 800 block of Hinman Avenue, Evanston, in connection with a home invasion that occurred in the 500 block of Chicago Avenue, Evanston, earlier this month.

Officers initially responded to a report of burglary on March 10, following a homeowner’s report that a man had broken into the back door of the home and picked up a knife from the kitchen while making direct threats, the police report said.

Residents of the home were able to secure themselves in another room while awaiting officers’ arrival. No residents were injured during the home invasion.

Upon entering the residence, officers found Hernandez still inside the home near the rear door, sustaining a serious injury to his left arm, which was bleeding heavily, the police report said.

Officers took Hernandez into custody, where he was later taken to the hospital for treatment.

According to the report, officers were unable to determine how Hernandez sustained his injury.

Hernandez later told detectives that he did not remember how or when the injury occurred.

Hernandez was released from medical care on March 18, and has since been charged by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office with one felony count of home invasion.

He is currently being held at Cook County Jail, with a scheduled court appearance for April 8 at the Skokie Courthouse.

Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
