Former Harvey City Clerk Rosa Arambula was appointed 1st Ward alderperson Monday, filling the role left vacant by acting Mayor Shirley Drewenski.
“I cannot think of one other better person, and I’m honored to call Rosa Arambula 1st Ward alderman,” Drewenski said.
Arambula resigned from her position as clerk at the beginning of the year without public comment or explanation, something 2nd Ward Ald. Colby Chapman drew attention to ahead of the appointment.
“The clerk’s resignation was not accompanied by a public explanation to the residents or to the council, and that sequence raises concerns about transparency and public trust,” Chapman said.
Arambula’s former position as clerk was filled in February with the appointment of Janet Rogers, the wife of 6th Ward Ald. Tyrone Rogers, in a move that prompted accusations of nepotism.
The vote to confirm the appointment of Arambula was 3-2, with Chapman and 4th Ward Ald. Tracy Key voting against.
Drewenski was chosen as acting mayor last month, following the January death of Mayor Christopher Clark.
A memorial service for Clark is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, 14618 Lincoln Ave., Harvey.
