Two men were fatally wounded Tuesday night in a double shooting in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, Chicago police said.
Shortly before 11:25 p.m., officers responded to a call of two people shot in the 7800 block of South Calumet Avenue where a preliminary investigation revealed the victims were outside when they were approached by at least five people. During the encounter, gunfire erupted.
A 37-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. A 44-year-old man was shot multiple times to the body and was taken to UChicago Medicine where he was later pronounced dead.
It was unclear how many people discharged weapons during the encounter. The suspects fled on foot toward 79th Street after the fatal shooting, police said.
No one was in custody, and detectives were investigating.
