Glencoe’s Public Safety Department is investigating an incident that occurred on March 24 at the Glencoe Golf Club, 621 Westley Road, where gunshots were fired on course property.

Public Safety officers said a neighboring residential property on Westley Road called 911 around 9:30 p.m. to report that they had heard sounds they described as “possible gunfire in the area,” according to the report.

After receiving the call, officers responded to the scene, but did not locate the individuals involved and could not verify that the incident had occurred.

On March 25, Glencoe Golf Club staff found physical evidence of firearm use and reported it to Public Safety, who resumed their investigation.

According to the report, officers have since learned that individuals entered the golf club and “discharged firearms into the air,” before immediately fleeing the scene. The offenders have not yet been located.

Public Safety Director Sean Loughran said the person who called 911 did not do so immediately.

“Unfortunately, the parties were gone upon our arrival so we could not verify what took place until the following afternoon when evidence on the golf course itself was located after being notified by Golf Club personnel,” he said.

Loughran said shell casings were located, but he did not identify the type thought to have been discharged.

Loughran noted loud noises are heard occasionally in the area.

“We do field similar calls from residents who believe they have heard shots and we investigate, but they almost always turn out to be fireworks,” he said.

He said an investigation is ongoing.

“We are going to investigate this as best we can and hold people accountable. It is unusual for the region and by all accounts these parties came to the scene, did what they did, and left immediately. There is no belief of any threat to the public at this time.”

Golf Club General Manager Stella Nanos said the golf club was operating normally on Thursday, March 26.

Currently, the Golf Club is undergoing a massive overhaul highlighted by the construction of a new clubhouse/pro shop. That building is expected to open later this year.

The Public Safety Department urged residents to contact the department if they observe any future suspicious or illegal activity.
