Kim Mathers was jailed Thursday by a district court judge for “numerous” violations of her drug and/or alcohol testing.
Mathers, 51, of Chesterfield Township, asked her attorney in a tone loud enough for onlookers to hear, “How long am I going to be in there?” moments after Judge William Hackel granted a prosecutors request to revoke Mathers’ bonds in her trio of cases and jail her for noncompliance.
Hackel of 42-II District Court in New Baltimore said Mathers could be released to an in-patient facility, with Assistant Macomb Prosecutor Joseph McCarthy reminding Hackel, “You’ve been encouraging her for two months to enter some sort of a treatment program” since she picked up her second charge in May.
“She’s failed to do that,” McCarthy said. “If she does find a program that will accept her, that’s something the court can consider, releasing her from the jail to do that.
“But, judge, the People (prosecutors) are seriously concerned about the nature of these offenses, the repeated violations. She poses a risk to herself and to our community. I would ask she be immediately remanded (to jail) today.”
Mathers’ attorney, Camilla Barkovic, responded, “I vehemently disagree withe assertions advanced by the People.”
Barkovic did not dispute Mathers’ numerous bond violations.
Jeremy Stradley of EMS Testing and Freedom Bail Bonds was on hand to testify about the test results but was not needed due to Barkovic’s stipulation.
Following the hearing outside of the courtroom, Barkovic said, “Kim Mathers is a wonderful young woman, and she’s being victimized by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.”
Hackel revoked Mathers’ pair of $10,000 bonds and a $5,000 bond.
Details of the violations were not disclosed due to Barkovic’s stipulation.
Mathers, the ex-wife of rap superstar Eminem, has had several scrapes with the law since February when she was first arrested for drunk driving. She was arrested again for drunk driving in May two days after she pleaded to the first incident.
A bench warrant was issued for her in June when she failed to show up for a court hearing.
Most recently, on July 11, she was taken to McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mount Clemens after she apparently passed out inside of her home due to a “Hemorrhage/Laceration,” according to a report. During that incident, she allegedly kicked a Chesterfield Township police officer for which she is charged with resisting arrest and resisting arrest causing injury, both felonies.
She faces a Sept. 3 probable cause conference in that case.
On Thursday, she was scheduled to be sentenced following her no contest plea last May 11 to operating while impaired and failing to report an accident stemming from a Feb. 16 hit-and-run traffic crash, including impaired driving with children in her SUV. Mathers was driving a white Range Rover that struck a silver Dodge Ram pickup truck parked on a street in the township, police said.
She also was to face a pretrial in her second recent drunk driving case. Mathers is charged with felony drunk driving (third offense) after she struck a Jeep Cherokee on Lord Drive, in the area of Hall Road and Gratiot Avenue in Chesterfield Township, while driving a 2026 Kia in Chesterfield on the night of May 13.
She also faced a show-cause hearing regarding the bond violations.
