Someone is looking for a quick flip.
The owners of a 10,966-square-foot Classical Revival-style mansion and surrounding 3.14-acre estate in Hinsdale that the family of the late Molex Inc. co-CEO Frederick Krehbiel sold in May for $7.5 million have now placed the property back on the market for $9.59 million.
Krehbiel, who was a nephew of former Chicago White Sox owner Bill Veeck, died in June 2021 at age 80. He retired in 2001, and Lisle-based Molex, an electronic components firm, was acquired in 2013 by Koch Industries for $7.2 billion.
Krehbiel was the longtime owner of the two-story, six-bedroom brick mansion, which was built shortly after 1900 for early Hinsdale settler Lemuel Freer. Said to have been designed by architect Joseph Llewellyn, the mansion was sold to coal magnate Stuyvesant Peabody in the 1910s, and it later was owned by Charles Duncan, a co-founder of the Old Spinning Wheel restaurant in Hinsdale.
The property consists of four separate parcels, all of which Krehbiel’s two sons sold in one package on May 18 for $7.5 million — just $175,000 shy of Hinsdale’s record residential sale price — in an off-market transaction to a mystery buyer. Records show that the buyer was an Illinois limited liability company whose manager is an opaque Colorado limited liability company.
Now, that mystery owner is seeking to flip the entire property for $9.59 million. Alternately, the owner is offering just the mansion and its surrounding 1.38-acre lot for just below $5 million.
The mansion, which has seven full bathrooms, two half bathrooms, wood inlay floors, a paneled library, millwork, dentil moldings, a carved 18th-century chimney piece over the dining room mantel and a basement bowling alley, is being offered for sale as-is.
The property is listed in the real estate agents’ private listing network. Listing agent Dawn McKenna did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
The estate had a $108,545 property tax bill in the 2020 tax year.
