Fast-food purveyors took some odd turns last week in combination and singly.

Sticking close to home in more ways than one, industry leader McDonald’s Corp. quietly opened a concept restaurant in west suburban Darien. The Hearth Express will test whether the hamburger king can succeed in a new niche-down-home cooking with a menu featuring meatloaf, baked ham and rotisserie chicken.

The home-style competition could be fierce, given the proliferation of chicken outfits, plus such entries as Old Country Buffet and Hometown Buffet.

Meanwhile, the owner of the Arby’s roast beef chain went fishing. Triarc Cos., which also owns the producer of Royal Crown soft drinks, agreed to buy Long John Silver’s Restaurants Inc. for $525 million.
