Waukegan’s first settler, Thomas Jenkins, moved into a log cabin in 1835, according to the Waukegan Historical Society. The railroad came to town in 1855, and the city was incorporated four years later. Now the county seat of Lake County, Waukegan boasts a population of just under 90,000.
