As a loyal reader of The Tribune, I am very disturbed by your Jan. 17 editorial ”A shift on Social Security.”
I have seen and heard President Reagan promise not to reduce Social Security, and I expect him to keep his promise like any decent man would.
But now The Tribune joins the ranks of people to whom $30 or $40 a month more or less is of no importance. These people want to reduce the national deficit by taking money from the poor and powerless–the easy way–instead of reducing waste and mismanagement in government.
I am near retirement. I have paid for and counted on my Social Security benefits. A freeze in cost-of-living adjustment may well mean having no telephone, no balanced diet or no new winter coat to many people. Apparently, well-off people do not think of those things.
