Playing cornet on his own album and fluegelhorn on the Parlan set, Thad Jones is the main focus of interest here–a unique solo voice whose gifts have been obscured a bit by his bandleading and composing careers.
Rhythmically angular and harmonically adventurous, Jones doesn`t sound like anyone else, and he shines on both albums. Knitted together by Parlan`s marvelous comping, ”Glad I Found You” is a groovy but thoughtful blowing date that pairs Jones with tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris. ”Three and One”
is Jones all the way, backed by two swinging Danes (pianist Ole Kock Hansen and bassist Jesper Lundgaard) and a notable expatriate, drummer Ed Thigpen.
Particularly striking on ”Three and One” are Jones` haunting ballad versions of ”My Romance” and ”My One and Only Love,” but both albums are consistently excellent.
