When lists are made of women who ”have it all,” Candice Bergen is usually on them. ”If it isn`t all, it`s pretty close,” says the actress.
”I don`t know how much more I could stand, frankly. I think a successful career is fairly easy for most people to achieve these days, but succeeding in life is getting more and more difficult. I feel very lucky.” After five years of marriage (to French director Louis Malle), Bergen says, ”(Marriage) is much easier than I thought it would be. I thought it would diminish life in many respects, but it`s not that way at all. It has just made my life better and richer.”
In ”American Swastika,” Charles Higham writes about Nazi collaborators from 1933 to the present, and he doesn`t hesitate to name names. Among them is French designer and perfume manufacturer Coco Chanel. According to Higham, in 1944, when Germany`s defeat in World War II appeared inevitable, Chanel tried to intervene on Germany`s behalf with Winston Churchill through an intermediary. After the war, Chanel was arrested in Paris by the U.S. High Command but was released within a few hours. ”Apparently, she named several names of people in high places who would be inconvenienced were she to stand trial,” writes Higham.
Finally, a celebrity with a fitness regime we can all identify with. In the April issue of Interview magazine, Carly Simon says: ”I never exercise. I have all the discipline of an Idaho potato, many of which I ingest frequently.” Simon is more interested in developing herself spiritually. Referring to her need for spiritual development, she says: ”Spirituality isn`t just for weekends. Musicians can get further away from themselves than artists in any other form. It`s the greatest release.”
