Magic North claimed his third straight stakes victory with a four-length win in the $54,350 John D. Hertz Handicap Sunday at Arlington Park.

The chestnut colt, voted Illinois` champion 2-year-old in 1984, took the lead just past the half-mile pole. He pulled away in the stretch from second-place finisher Spanish Devil to win the 1 1/8-mile race in 1:50 4/5.

The $32,610 winner`s purse, coupled with Magic North`s winnings from the Isaac Murphy Handicap and the SIU Stakes at Fairmount Park, built his 1985 earnings to $93,289. He has earned $178,239 lifetime.

Ridden by Gerland Gallitano, the favorite paid $5.40, $3.20 and $2.40. Major Luck finished third.
