Still-camera manufacturers are getting into the video-camera business and the one-piece, all-in-one system seems to be preferred.
Olympus has announced a new model, the portable, lightweight VX-402, with a two-hour-plus recording time, weighing a little over 5 pounds. The full-size half-inch VHS video cassette recorder and video camera in a single body has everything needed for live video and audio recording.
The fully automatic camcorder offers instant on-the-spot video playback, recording and playback from all video sources through the VX-402. Its rechargable battery pack slips on and off with a touch, providing two hours of shooting per charge.
After shooting, the camcorder connects to a TV for direct playback, or to a VCR for editing and dubbing. You can play back any prerecorded VHS-format tape–from rented movies to home recorded–and watch them on your TV set.
It allows one-handed operation, because the control panel is right at the fingertips. Fully automatic focus, balance and exposure control ensure worry- free shooting. The camera takes care of all the details.
The Olympus auto-focus system works continuously and automatically to keep the subject in clear focus. It uses an active infrared beam to measure camera-to-subject distance. You can set the camera on manual focus with a focus lock if desired.
It has a built-in electronic viewfinder that allows you to review scenes just taped, instantly. Any changes or retakes can be recorded on the spot.
The VX-402 Movie Camcorder will be available in early August. For information write to: Olympus Corp., Consumers Products Group, Crossways Park, Woodbury, N.Y., 11797.
