Remember Manet`s ”Le Dejeuner sur l`Herbe,” depicting a nude lady and two gentlemen picnicking in the woods? Joggers witnessed Chicago`s upscale version several steps from the shoreline at North Avenue Beach, around 7:10 a.m. last Wednesday.
Silhoutted against a rippling Lake Michigan, two tuxedoed waiters stood with hands behind their backs, overseeing two couples seated at a what looked to be a card table. With the tablecloth flapping in the breeze, a single red rose wavering over china and crystal, the couples breakfasted, ignoring the raised eyebrows and open mouths of runners and walkers.
Unlike the woman in Manet`s masterpiece, the couples were completely clothed.
No wonder. The temperature was a bracing 44 degrees.
