Manager Dick Howser couldn`t say for sure that Hal McRae would start Friday as designated hitter, but it`s a good bet he will be in the Kansas City lineup.

McRae missed Game 1 of the American League championship series because of a pulled muscle in his side. The Royals started McRae in Game 2, and he singled his first two at-bats.

”He took treatment today,” Howser said, ”and it all depends on how Hal feels tomorrow.”

— George Brett barked back at reporters after Game 2.

The Royals lost 6-5 in 10 innings, and maybe these more reflective words explain Brett`s feelings: ”I can`t remember a loss that hurt worse than this. You`re up and you`re down, up, down, you`ve won it, you`re tied, you`ve won, you`ve tied–somebody new won it every inning. Every time they needed a lift, we gave it to them. It`s very hard to take.

”You play 164 games, you play 100 of them great, 20 of them decent and some of the others you don`t play well. The last two days happen to be two of those kind.

”All those maple leafs waving back and forth every inning–it was like an international event, an Olympic Games. You hope we can get together with our fans, where maybe we can wave Old Glory for a while, and slow down their momentum.”

— Umpire Dave Phillips, who made the disputed call Wednesday that Toronto center-fielder Lloyd Moseby had trapped a sinking fly ball, likes TV replays.

”It`s the greatest thing ever invented for umpires because before we had it everyone just assumed we were wrong,” Phillips said.
