Rain may yet water down the Class AA state golf tournament, but Hinsdale South`s Doug Rabold seemed to be at full strength during the first round Friday.
The Hornet senior and Edwardsville`s Alex Van Diver shot par 72s at rain- drenched Kellogg Golf Course to share the individual lead.
Rockford Guilford shot 303 to take a 1-stroke lead over Edwardsville. Deerfield is third at 309. Defending champion St. Charles is 11th at 321.
In the Class A tournament at nearby Arrowhead Country Club in Chillicothe, Monmouth shot 318 to 324 for second-place Aledo. Geneva`s Kevin Kros, Aurora Central Catholic`s Mike Cowen and Metro East`s Josh Brown are tied for the individual lead with 77s.
The rain at Kellogg became more intense as the day wore on, putting Saturday`s final round in jeopardy. Officials will decide Saturday morning if the tournament will be a one- or two-day event.
Rainfall forced cancellation of Friday`s first round of the girls` state tournament at the Illinois State University course in Normal. The 36-hole tournament will now be played as an 18-hole event Saturday morning. If rain persists, officials will decide the tournament`s fate Saturday.
Rabold was 3-under-par until he bogeyed the 15th hole and double-bogeyed the 16th.
”I feel good going into tomorrow,” he said. ”I didn`t play up to my ability. I know I can play better. Being 3-under and throwing three shots away in two holes is not the way to win a golf tournament.”
