R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co. Thursday reported a 9.9 percent increase in net income for the third quarter on a 12.3 percent sales gain.

Earnings for the period advanced to $43.1 million, or $1.13 a share, from $39.2 million, or $1.03 a share, a year earlier. Sales rose to $529.4 million from $471.1 million.

For the first nine months, Chicago-based Donnelley reported net earnings of $102.1 million, or $2.67 a share, up 10.9 percent from the $92.8 million, or $2.43 a share, earned in the 1984 period. Sales of $1.43 billion were up 12.7 percent from $1.26 billion a year earlier.

Chairman and President John B. Schwemm cited ”generally good” demand for Donnelley`s services ”despite the occurrence of some softening in certain areas.”
