After-tax profits for U.S. manufacturers was 3.7 percent of sales in the third quarter, down from 4.4 percent of sales in the third quarter of last year, the Commerce Department said. Profits on nondurable goods were $13.4 billion in the quarter, down from $14.46 billion a year earlier. For durable goods makers, profits were $8.15 billion, down from $11.21 billion.
