The city council majority bloc`s budget proposal to create a new advisory commission on women is a wasteful and illogical suggestion. Chicago already has such a body–the Mayor`s Advisory Commission on Women`s Affairs, established by executive order in 1984. The existing commission provides a voice for women`s issues within city government and serves as an effective link between city officials and women`s rights organizations.
Chicago NOW urges the city council to demonstrate its concern for women by strengthening and increasing the budget of the commission we already have.
