says Hall. ”I do so many interviews and I`m so open with my fans I couldn`t imagine they`d want more.” If they don`t, ”I`ll say it`s a great idea whose time hasn`t come, yet.”
Warren Beatty is good at a lot of things, but giving interviews isn`t one of them. Barbara Walters called him ”the most difficult interview I ever did.” Rex Reed said getting him to answer a question is as futile as ”asking a hemophiliac for a pint of blood.” In his biography, ”Shirley & Warren,”
of Beatty and his equally famous sister Shirley MacLain, James Spada writes that Warren refuses to discuss ”his personal life, his childhood, his relationships, even, surprisingly, his films. It is his belief that if he has to explain a character, he hasn`t played him well enough.”
Inspiration comes in many guises. Sally Field once got the push she needed from Robert Mitchum. It happened while they were making ”The Way West” after ”Gidget” was canceled. He mentioned Myrna Loy and said Field was ”one of them.” ”He meant he thought I had talent, like some of those actresses,” recalls Field in the March issue of Playboy. ”When I won the People`s Choice Award, I sat at the table with (him). I hadn`t seen him in 20 years. I said, `Mr. Mitchum, do you remember me?` He said, `I told you so.` ”
