A Juvenile Court judge on Friday ordered a 14-year-old Harvey boy held in custody for the shooting of his high school algebra teacher, the Cook County state`s attorney`s office said.
Citing the ”explosive nature of the act,” Judge John Rogers ordered the teenager held in the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, 1100 S. Hamilton Ave., according to Assistant State`s Atty. David Izzo. The judge ”was also concerned about him being a danger to himself because he put the gun to his head” after shooting the teacher at the start of a class Thursday morning in Dolton`s Thornridge High School, Izzo said.
The boy, a freshman at Thornridge, was arraigned on a juvenile petition accusing him of attempted murder, aggravated battery and unlawful use of a weapon.
The teacher, Norma Cooper, 52, of Dolton, remained in good condition in Ingalls Memorial Hospital, Harvey, with a bullet wound in her left shoulder, a hospital spokesman said.
Thornridge principal Barbara Palmer said school administrators took to the halls Friday ”to make adults more visible,” but she said there were no plans to tighten security at the school.
The student shot Cooper with his father`s .357 Magnum revolver, according to police and witnesses.
