A 33-year-old man was indicted Monday for allegedly killing a man over an Easter banana pudding pie.
Mack Lewis, 13147 S. Ellis Ave., allegedly killed Clarence Marshall on Easter Sunday because Marshall had banana pudding pie and ”didn`t bring any home to his grandchildren,” said Assistant State`s Atty. Gregory Girote.
Marshall was shot once in the chest at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, which was his 60th birthday, Girote said.
Marshall had been living in an Altgeld Gardens Chicago Housing Authority townhouse with one of his daughters, Elizabeth Roberts, who is Lewis`
girlfriend, Girote said.
Lewis and Roberts` two sons, 8 and 12 years old, also lived there, he said.
But on Easter Sunday, Marshall went to another daughter`s home, had banana pudding pie with her children and did not bring any home to Roberts`
children, Girote said.
He said Lewis got angry because Marshall ”was saying how good the pie was and didn`t bring any home to them.”
Lewis allegedly thought Marshall ”didn`t treat those grandchildren as well as he treated the other grandchildren,” Girote said. ”So he pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest.”
One of the children, 12-year-old Gregory Roberts, watched from the top of the stairs as Lewis pulled a gun on the grandfather, Girote said. Before he fired, Lewis allegedly said, ”I`m tired of being called a punk.”
Girote said that Marshall managed to pull a knife out of his back pocket and stab Lewis once before he died. The defense, though, argued that Marshall stabbed Lewis first and that Lewis fired the shot in self-defense.
Police caught Lewis outside the townhouse holding the .22 handgun, Girote said.
A Cook County grand jury indicted Lewis for murder and armed violence;
Judge Stuart Nudelman set a $50,000 bond. Lewis will be arraigned before Cook County Criminal Court Chief Judge Richard J. Fitzgerald on April 21.
