U.S. District Judge Gene Carter of Portland, Me., recently ruled that a student who had been suspended from classes for making an ”obscene gesture” to a teacher should be re-admitted to classes. He accepted the arguments of the defendant`s lawyers that such a gesture is protected under the free speech provisions of the U.S. Constitution-giving an entirely new meaning to ”free as a bird.”
