Praise for the comprehensive story of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago (June 5). This institute of sparkling accomplishment in teaching and performance is acclaimed around the world. It is one of the jewels of the university, of Chicago, of the world.
Several years ago, as an adult, I registered for class instruction and learned not only about the structures of ancient civilizations but also that these ancient little cities–with their trade routes, productive farms, products of silver, gold and metal and jewel-decorated temples–were peopled with people. Real people who were successful, doers, and achievers, who laid the foundations upon which we build today in order to become achievers. They are well worth knowing.
In this well-founded story an incredible problem is mentioned concerning the educational program of the institute which covers 50,000 school children. It is this: The school children of Chicago cannot take the scheduled field trips provided. Why? The Board of Education of Chicago will not pay the charter bus fee.
What can be done to rectify this unthinkable problem?
