Former Atty. Gen. William J. Scott was a courageous and articulate leader on controversial environmental issues.
He was in the forefront of opposition to the large-scale dumping of highly radioactive spent nuclear fuel from other states at General Electric`s Morris operation–because he feared irreversible contamination of the drinking water aquifers under the plant.
Scott exercised his obligation to protect the health and safety of Illinois citizens in a forthright, compelling manner. For this, he will be remembered as an outstanding Illinois attorney general.
The loss of William Scott to public service, as attorney general, was a tragedy for the people of Illinois, future generations and the state. His death makes permanent that loss.
