In a recent editorial, Joan Beck advocated year-round schooling for children. Beck feels this would make American children ”comparable in achievement and knowledge on tests to children in industrialized nations.”

Ms. Beck, life itself is an education. The freedom to explore and experience life`s possiblities is an exercise that no classroom setting could ever duplicate.

Children need varied experiences to develop character, personality traits and human emotions. Do textbooks teach compassion? Friendship? Dedication? I think not.

As an university honors graduate, I believe in higher education, but there is nothing ”textbook” about the real world and the experiences derived from participating in it.
