Jackie Onassis is busy supervising the building of her new fortress at Gay Head on Martha`s Vineyard, but don`t get the idea she looks at the place as her royal castle. Yet, she has issued one little edict: Construction workers are not to raise their eyes when she is on an inspection tour. The penalty is worthy of the Queen of Hearts: Peek and you`re fired. She did give a little vacation to her personal pilot, though. He was ordered to fly from New York to the island to pick up a tiny fabric swatch and immediately fly it back to her Manhattan interior designer. One more thing: Jackie is having the flush water in the bathrooms of her new house heated so that going to the bathroom will be a warming experience.

LEFT BANK OR RIGHT?

Frequent travelers are always pumping each other for the name of a good hotel in Paris, usually with preferences for either the Left Bank or the Right Bank. Celebrities ask the same question–of their agents–and here`s where they end up. On the classic, posh Right Bank: Ivan Lendl, winner of the French Open and the U.S. Open, at the Hotel Concorde Lafayette. Gregory Peck, Woody Allen and James Coburn at the Ritz on the Place Vendome; Raquel Welch and Charles Bronson, at the George V. Liza Minnelli (the name as published has been corrected in this text) loves two hotels: George V and the Crillon, where Elizabeth Taylor has slept, near the American Embassy. Quaint hotels aren`t outre, either. On the artsy Left Bank, Robert De Niro, Mick Jagger and Barbra Streisand at L`Hotel, which Oscar Wilde made famous. And at L`Abbaye Saint-Germain, alas just Albert Finney and Milos Forman.

Travel is the thing that rejuvenates actor Richard Gere when he`s not on film location or spending time in Manhattan with his live-in girlfriend, Brazilian painter Sylvia Martins. ”I go as far away as I can, physically and culturally. I usually end up somewhere in the East, whether Indonesia or Nepal. I gravitate toward that because it`s so totally different from this.” After he finished filming the not-so-powerful ”Power,” he took off for Bali and Borneo.

Vacationing recently at the luxurious San Petro Hotel on the Amalfi Coast were producer Norman Lear and Tina Turner–no, not with Norman but with her secretary.

Tom Hanks, everybody`s boy next door, spent some time with his 4-year-old daughter two weeks ago at Maui`s Kapalua Bay Hotel. Also staying at villas at the Hawaiian resort: Ali MacGraw, with her teenage son, and Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell with their 3-month-old son.

At the poker table in Las Vegas last week: Redd Foxx. . . . On Martha`s Vineyard: R&B singer Jeffery (”Stay with Me Tonight”) Osborne, fishing on the jetty in Menasha. And actor John Candy, who spends his summer vacations on the island mowing his friends` lawns for free. He claims his summer job helps him keep his weight down, but if you offer him a six-pack for services rendered, he won`t turn you down. —
