Another sign of economic slowdown appeared Monday as September orders for new machine tools fell to $134.8 million, down 22.6 percent from the year-earlier month and 12.7 percent from August. ”Quite frankly, we were surprised,” said James A. Gray, president of the National Machine Tool Builders` Association, which issued the report. ”We have just put one of the most successful machine tool trade shows ever under our belt, but this doesn`t seem reflected in our statistics. . . . Our numbers are simply reflecting the reality of today`s manufacturing environment.”
