The first time I came to the U.S. as a tourist, I saw a lot of discrimination–blacks had to go to the rear of the buses; there were water fountains for whites and blacks; and cafeterias and restaurants had separate sections for blacks apart from the whites.

When I came back to the U.S. as a political exile 16 years later, I found that this discrimination had disappeared.

The change occurred without any country putting economic sanctions on the U.S.
