Carter Hawley Hale Stores Inc. said it agreed to sell its 16 John Wanamaker department stores on the East Coast to Woodward & Lothrop Inc., a company controlled by Detroit shopping center tycoon Alfred Taubman. While no exact price was given, Carter Hawley indicated that Woodward & Lothrop of Troy, Mich., would pay about $175 million for the Wanamaker stores.
