It might have started with the bowed red tresses of Princess Fergie. Whatever the reason, the hair bow is becoming a fashion obsession.

Bows everywhere are a popular accent for spring with both American and European designers–at the waist, on belts, on gloves, as prints or in jewelry. But Milan`s Gianni Versace took the trend straight to the top, with hairpieces twisted into bow shapes, and other designers showed simple hair bows to accentuate the the season`s return to femininity.

Mary Lou Maher, owner of Glorious Hats, at 66 E. Walton Pl., says, ”With the popularity of longer hair, more and more women are wearing ponytails for daytime and evening, and adding a hair bow offers a more polished look.”

Maher, a hat fancier and designer of several of the looks on these pages, says customers are buying plain black silk hairbows for daytime and fancier ones for special occasions.

One way to get into the trend now is to complement a sexy-necklined and flirty-skirted New Year`s Eve frock with a bow. There`s a wide range of choices: satin, velvet, net, silk, snakeskin, bright jewel tones, sparkling rhinestones or silver or gold mesh. —
