Mass for Evangeline Phalin, 80, a former suburban high school teacher and a member of the Women`s Advisory Council of the University of Notre Dame, will be said by Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, the university`s president, at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 912 Linden Ave., Wilmette. Thursday would have been Mrs. Phalin`s 81st birthday. A former resident of the North Shore suburbs who had lived in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Fla., since 1984, Mrs. Phalin died Sunday in Pompano Beach, Fla. Before marrying in 1930, Mrs. Phalin taught Latin and trigonometry at Argo Community High School, Summit, and Bloom Township High School, Chicago Heights. Mrs. Phalin is survived by her husband, Howard V. Phalin, former chairman of Field Enterprises Educational Corp., which published World Book Encyclopedia, and a sister.
