Gentlemen, start your popcorn machines. The race to view the Oscar nominees before the winners are announced officially has begun.

It won`t be easy; there are lots of films to see and not a whole lot of time to see them. But the alternative–sitting through the March 30 Acadamy Awards program without an inkling as to which film or performer to root for

–is too horrible to contemplate. How are you to know which decision to applaud and which to jeer?

Luckily, virtually every nominee of consequence is available in the Chicago area–or will be before Oscar time–in theatrical or video release. The lone exception–”Mona Lisa,” currently on view no closer than Springfield and South Bend, Ind.–is expected to be re-released soon.
