Violence flared for a second night Friday in a mostly black neighborhood where a melee on Thursday had followed the death of a young black man in police custody. Five adults and nine juveniles were arrested late Friday and two people suffered minor injuries in the latest disturbance. Isolated groups of up to 40 roaming youths broke windows of several businesses and pelted police cars with rocks and bottles, said Public Safety Administrator Robert Smith. Earlier in the week, a black man had died after he was subdued by a white officer using a choke hold.
