Recently The Tribune gave its approval to the new $88 billion highway bill. If this bill was so good, why do the following points stick in my throat?
The 150 items of obvious ”pork barrel”; one, for example, pays for paving the parking lot in a city`s shopping mall.
The estimate that the increase in speed limits will increase use of gasoline by trucks alone more than 3 million gallons daily.
The estimate by the National Safety Council that the increase in speed will cause an increase of 4,000 deaths and 22,000 injuries yearly.
That this is a budget-busting bill at a time when we desperately need to reduce the budget. That most of our national budget is a ”pump priming
” device and, in light of present employment, more is not needed.
