NutraSweet Co. opened a research and development plant Tuesday in northwest suburban Mt. Prospect. The $14 million facility employs 150 researchers and 50 support people for the company, which makes the artificial sweetener aspartame. NutraSweet Co., a subsidiary of Monsanto Co., was broken off as a separate business unit from G.D. Searle & Co. when Searle was acquired by St. Louis-based Monsanto in 1985.
