Eric Show, who hit Andre Dawson in the face with a pitch Tuesday, was a no-show at Wrigley Field Wednesday. San Diego manager Larry Bowa thought that having Show on the premises would invite trouble from hostile fans.

All-Star second baseman Ryne Sandberg returned from his father`s funeral in Spokane, Wash., Tuesday night before learning of the travails of Dawson and the fight between the Padres and the Cubs Tuesday afternoon.

”I was off the plane about two minutes before I heard about it,” said Sandberg. ”I just couldn`t believe it. I couldn`t wait to get home and see if I could see it on the news and get to the park and see how Andre was doing. I checked with Andre this morning, and he said he was all right. His lip was just a little bit swollen and a little bit sore. He wanted to be back in there today if he could.”

Dawson was in uniform but stayed in the training room and sent word to reporters that he did not want to discuss the Show incident just yet.
