The White Sox and Oakland could be close to working out deal involving Floyd Bannister. Sox General Manager Larry Himes is with the Sox`s Triple-A club in Hawaii, but reportedly he is scouting its opponent, Oakland`s Triple-A team, Tacoma. A`s pitcher Jose Rijo is believed to have been part of the package offered to the Sox.
The Sox wouldn`t mind parting with Bannister (4-7) and his million-dollar plus contract. The A`s, meanwhile, are looking for pitching help. They suffered a big blow Tuesday, when they lost Moose Haas for the season.
Manager Jim Fregosi inserted Daryl Boston back into the starting lineup Wednesday night after starting him in only once (last Thursday in Cleveland)
in the previous nine games. Fregosi hasn`t been pleased with Boston`s attitude. ”I`d like to see more intensity from him,” he said.
Jerry Royster, who played with Eric Show for two years in San Diego, didn`t think the pitcher was intentionally trying to hit Andre Dawson Tuesday. ”He`s not that kind of pitcher,” Royster said.
Richard Dotson (6-5) opposes Bob Tewksbury (1-3) in the New York opener Thursday night. The Sox lost two one-run games in their last visit to Yankee Stadium in May.
The Sox have scheduled nine tryout camps throughout the Chicago area and neighboring states. The first one will be Friday at Bowen Park in Waukegan. For more information, call Mike Rizzo at 283-4419.
