Ryne Sandberg, on the disabled list since June 13 with a badly sprained right ankle, practiced running the bases before Friday`s game and appeared fit enough to play Saturday against the Dodgers.
”To me, he`s okay,” said manager Gene Michael. ”We`ll have to wait until Saturday morning to know for sure.”
Sandberg is optimistic about his own comeback as well as the team`s.
”We`re still in the picture for the second half,” he said. ”I don`t think we`ve really played up to our ability so far.”
Andre Dawson, who hasn`t played since being hit in the face by an Eric Show fastball Tuesday, said he plans to take batting practice Saturday. His availability is a day-to-day matter.
New York Mets manager Davey Johnson has picked Houston`s Mike Scott to start for the NL in Tuesday`s All-Star game. There had been speculation that the Cubs` Rick Sutcliffe would start.
The Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays Vice President Pat Gillick both denied a published report that Los Angeles had asked Gillick to take over their baseball operations in 1988. The story was in the Toronto Globe and Mail.
