Retiring General Motors Corp. President F. James McDonald said the fuel shortages of the 1970s permanently altered the shape of the auto industry.
”The fuel shortages gave the Japanese a foothold with cars they`d been producing forever for their market, so it wasn`t a big change for them,” he said. Their entry into the U.S. market, McDonald said, ”changed the ball game for all of us.”
