Philadelphia`s Charles Baker Adult League has suspended play indefinitely in the wake of contract problems for Bulls forward Gene Banks. Sonny Hill, organizer of the league, said he was considering legal action against the Bulls and the NBA, and that his attorney, Michael Richman, had sent a letter to Jerry Krause, Bulls` chief of basketball operations, and the office of NBA commissioner David Stern informing them of a possible suit. Banks, 28, suffered a severe and possibly career-ending injury to his left Achilles tendon while playing in the league`s all-star game in June. The Bulls have told Banks they won`t pay his full salary in 1987-88 because he played without the team`s consent.
Matt Bullard, the University of Colorado`s leading scorer and rebounder, says he is transferring to a school with more basketball tradition, possibly Iowa. Bullard, a 6-foot-10-inch forward who averaged 16.6 points and 9.3 rebounds last season, was honorable mention all-Big Eight his first two seasons. His father, Charles Bullard, told the Des Moines Register that Iowa, Arizona and Notre Dame top his son`s list of places where he might transfer. Bullard was a first-team all-state selection at West Des Moines Valley High School. After transferring, Bullard must sit out one season in compliance with NCAA rules.
North Korea said the International Olympic Committee`s latest proposal falls far short of meeting its demand to join South Korea as host of the 1988 Summer Olympics, and called for another meeting on the issue before Sept. 17. A North Korean statement said the problem is South Korea`s intention ”to monopolize the `Seoul Olympics` as planned originally and singlehandedly stage the Games for its political purposes.”
Auburn quarterback Jeff Burger has pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed weapon and was fined $50 plus $32 court costs, according to the Birmingham
(Ala.) News. Auburn Municipal Court records show that Burger was arrested at 4:57 a.m. July 14 after a fight in the parking lot of a restaurant. He was placed in jail until Pat Sullivan, the team`s quarterback coach, posted $700 bond. A charge of public intoxication was dropped after he pleaded guilty to the other charge, according to the newspaper. Burger could not be reached for comment but coach Pat Dye said the quarterback was ”a victim of circumstances” and would not be disciplined. Burger is to go through a university appeal hearing Thursday on plagiarism charges in connection with classwork.
The Hall of Fame Bowl game has been moved from Dec. 30 to Jan. 2 and will be televised by NBC Sports, replacing coverage of the Fiesta Bowl, which will be broadcast on New Year`s Day.
Jim Dennison, the Akron football coach who was replaced by former Notre Dame coach Gerry Faust, reportedly is to be named the school`s new athletic director Wednesday.
University of Texas defensive back James Lott will be declared ineligible for accepting a $1,800 loan from sports agent Lloyd Bloom, athletic director DeLoss Dodds said. Lott denied telling Dodds he signed the note.
