In an era when interest in transportation history is at an all-time high, and when there are more railroad museums than ever, the cold-blooded scrapping of Grand Trunk locomotive No. 5629 (Tribune, July 17) is unconscionable.
So what if a buyer could not be found? She could have been donated to any of half a dozen organizations in the Midwest, perhaps to be restored to running condition, or simply exhibited.
Destroying this artifact of a lost era is a crime against history comparable with the demolition of the Chicago Stock Exchange building or the bulldozing of an endangered species` habitat.
