Installing an artificial turf field that could cost as much as $1.5 million is the last obstacle in contract talks between Illinois and Fullerton State baseball coach Augie Garrido. ”If I get a commitment from Illinois to put in an AstroTurf field, I will be going there,” Garrido said. ”Everything else in the offer is workable. It is for three years.” Garrido has coached Fullerton State for 14 years. His teams have won two College World Series.
Chicago sales manager Joe Chapman has swum the English Channel in 11 hours. It was Chapman`s first attempt to swim the 21-mile channel.
Terry Labonte broke the Watkins Glen qualifying record on the way to winning the pole position for Sunday`s Glen NASCAR stock car race. His speed was 117.956 miles an hour. The record had been 117.563 by Tim Richmond last year. Rusty Wallace was the No. 2 qualifier. . . . Nigel Mansell won the provisional pole for the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest. He averaged 101.980 m.p.h. Alain Prost was second.
Rejecting pleas for leniency, U.S. District Judge Susan Black of Jacksonville, Fla., has sentenced former race-car driver John Paul Sr. to the maximum 25-year prison term for marijuana smuggling and other charges. Paul, 48, pleaded guilty in a plea bargain to operating a continuing criminal enterprise, tax evasion and conspiring to obtain a false passport after shooting a witness.
The Winnetka Pro Tennis Classic will be held Aug. 17-23 at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Club. Included in the field will be Greg Holmes, who upset Jimmy Connors in the Volvo International. The qualifier for the tournament will be held Aug. 15-16 at the same site.
