Tom Jager of Collinsville, Ill., set a world record Thursday in the 50-meter freestyle at the Pan Pacific swimming championships in Brisbane, Australia. His time was 22.32 seconds, trimming one-hundredth of a second off the mark held by Matt Biondi. ”A world record is something you dream about every night before you go to sleep,” Jager said. ”It is what we do all the work for. I`ve been swimming a long time but can`t help but get excited. It`s a tremendous feeling.” Jager dedicated his victory to his wife, Becky, who was unable to fly to Australia for the event because of business commitments. ”She`s paid my way for the last 13 months,” Jager said.
The Chicago Yacht Club will host the International Star Class championships. Defending champ Vince Brun of San Diego is expected to be on hand for the week of racing Aug. 22-30. Star class boats are all of the same design and sail measurement, so races on the nearly 10-mile course will be run without handicaps, said club spokesman Mel Surdel. At least 86 boats from 16 countries have registered.
